Apollo 11 Launched 50 Years Ago

[서울=RNX뉴스] 박은경 기자 = On July 16, 1969, the first U.S. lunar landing mission departed from Cape Canaveral in Florida to the surface of the moon.

Onboard the historic journey were astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin. The crew traveled 240,000 miles in 76 hours, and entered into a lunar orbit on July 19.

A lunar module, Eagle, took Armstrong and Aldrin to the southwestern edge of the Sea of Tranquility. Before stepping off the craft, Armstrong gave his famous speech to millions of people listening at home.

Neil Armstrong Armstrong became the first human to walk on the surface of the moon.

The two took photos of the surface of the moon, spoke with President Nixon and planted an American flag .

The two successfully rejoined with Collins and made it safely back home to Earth.
